SC Veteran Success: Another Veteran family benefits from Tuition & Education Assistance Bill

April 06, 2021

Another student in the Palmetto State is attending college tuition-free thanks to the Free Tuition and Education Assistance Bill (for certain Veteran's children).

Retired Sergeant First Class Rodney Ross and his family had been paying right at $1,600 per month in tuition since the beginning of the school year in August 2020. In February 2021, the Ross family contacted Dorian Sease-Phillips, the Administrative/Free Tuition Coordinator about their daughter's tuition assistance.

Within days, their daughter receives an email stating that her account was paid in full. SFC Rodney Ross’ wife, Yolanda Ross, writes to Dorian, “Hopefully, every client that you’re able to aid, as you have us, will be forever changed as it pertains to Veterans Affairs tuition assistance and more!”

Dorian

Dorian says, “when you’re given the opportunity in this lifetime to give someone ‘A little extra’ or to ‘Make a wrong right’, just do it!!  That’s always a good thing. It is in those moments that I’m reminded that I’m walking in my purpose!”

The Free Tuition and Education Assistance Bill provides a tuition waiver for qualified children of certain military Veterans applying to, or enrolled in a South Carolina state supported college, university or post high school technical education school; or acceptance into a dual enrollment/early college credit program prior to graduating high school. Qualifying veterans and students must meet certain residency requirements. For a complete list of veteran eligibility requirements, and state supported institutions, please reference page four of the Tuition Assistance Application.
