Our Relationship with the Media
The South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs (SCDVA) Office of Public Information serves as the responsible advocate of the Secretary’s intent in the line of effort of Informing and educating the public, State and local leaders and Veterans on all matters pertaining to Veterans.
The Office of Public Information’s communication with members of the media and the public is guided by the principles of integrity, honesty, accuracy, and media ethics.
Our staff will respond promptly, courteously, and professionally to requests from members of the news media who seek information about the South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs or access to the department’s Secretary, senior leadership, staff, and/or Veteran service organizations and partners.
SCDVA’s Office of Public Information expects members of the news media to conduct themselves in an ethical and professional manner when contacting or interacting with department staff and partners, or when present at SCDVA headquarters, designated facilities, or SCDVA events. The news media should request permission from the Office of Public Information before filming on any SCDVA properties or department-hosted events.
M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery Media Policy
The SCDVA Office of Public Information responds to media queries and facilitates requests for media interviews. These requests should be directed to the SCDVA Office of Public Information.
*Please note: Media requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. In order to be considered for approval, media requests must be about the cemetery or about someone interred or inurned at the cemetery.
Photography
Photography is permitted within the grounds of M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery. Photographers who are members of news organizations should contact the SCDVA Office of Public Information to schedule dates and times for photographs to be taken.
We ask media and cemetery visitors to respect the solemnity of M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery by refraining from taking pictures of or filming someone who is visibly mourning. Please ask for permission to film or photograph those visiting a gravesite.

State Veteran Nursing Homes Media Policy
There are five state-run Veteran nursing home facilities in South Carolina with a new facility soon to open in Sumter. Admission to these facilities is limited to Veterans who have been separated from the U.S. Armed Forces under general or honorable conditions and qualify as South Carolina residents who are in need of skilled or intermediate nursing home care.
Media inquiries regarding state Veteran nursing homes should also be directed to the SCDVA Office of Public Information at communications@scdva.sc.gov
