Veteran of the week collage

Thank you for nominating a Veteran who honorably served to be considered as a South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs (SCDVA), Veteran of the Week! As of October of 2022, SCDVA is expanding the Veteran of the Week honor to recognize those who served. If selected as a Veteran of the Week, honorees will then be entered in an internal selection process to be considered for Veteran of the Quarter, and potentially for South Carolina Veteran of the Year.

This new nomination process is not only about honoring South Carolina Veterans, but also educating our youth and citizens about Veterans who have honorably served and continue to make contributions to the Palmetto State.

You can find a new nomination form for Veteran of the Week at the link posted in the right corner of this webpage article.

Veteran of the Quarter & Veteran of the Week

Veteran of the year process

SCDVA will accept nominations for Veteran of the Week for 12 weeks during each quarter (four) throughout the year. All Veteran of the Week submissions will be scheduled for honor in the order that they are received. On week 13, a Veteran of the Quarter will be selected by an internal selection committee through a scoring process.

The honoree and the nominator will be notified via phone or email and will have the option to take a photo and receive a certificate from the SCDVA Secretary and be interviewed by the SCDVA Public Information staff. **Please note, if selected for Veteran of the Week, the Veteran cannot be nominated again until the following year to be honored (start of next Quarter 1).

Once Quarter 4 is complete, the Internal Selection Committee will meet again to review Veteran of the Quarter honorees. The committee will use a scoring selection process to select the South Carolina Veteran of the Year. All Veteran of the Quarter honorees and nominators will then be invited to attend a ceremony where the South Carolina Veteran of the Year will be announced on or near Veterans Day in November.

The Internal Selection Committee will be comprised of up to five members. Three from Veteran service organizations in South Carolina, with two staffers from SCDVA. The internal selection committee will use a score card with a series of questions to select a Veteran of the Quarter and the South Carolina Veteran of the Year.

**Please note: The selection committee will use information provided from the Veteran of the Week nomination form and bio on the Veteran. Detailed information from nominators on this form is important as this will factor into how the Internal Selection Committee scores Veterans for Veteran of the Quarter and Veteran of the Year.
