COLUMBIA, SC (SCDVA) - The South Carolina Department of Veterans' Affairs recognizes Veterans Day, observed annually on November 11th, as one of the most vital moments on our calendar. More than just a federal holiday, Veterans Day is a powerful, nationwide commemoration dedicated to expressing profound gratitude to all who have served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces—in wartime and in peacetime.
While we solemnly remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice on Memorial Day, Veterans Day is distinct; it is a celebration intended to honor and thank our living Veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy. Originally known as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I hostilities on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the day was wisely renamed in 1954 to ensure all American veterans, from every conflict and era, are recognized.
For the Palmetto State, home to a deep military tradition and a large, thriving Veteran community, this observance holds special resonance. The South Carolina Department of Veterans' Affairs exists to serve those who served, and Veterans Day is a reminder of our unwavering mission to secure the benefits, resources, and respect every veteran and their family have earned. We encourage all South Carolinians to join us in acknowledging the immense contributions of these remarkable men and women who continue to enrich our state's economy, culture, and communities.
