Inside Veterans Treatment Court, a three-part video series, explores how South Carolina judges, solicitors, and fellow Veterans are stepping up to extend a lifeline through Veterans Treatment Court (VTC). This diversionary program offers help—rather than time behind bars—to Veterans facing non-violent charges.

The women and men who serve our nation shield civilians from witnessing the difficult realities of protecting our country. For some Veterans, however, that sacrifice comes at a cost. Trauma experienced before becoming a service member, during their time in the military, or while transitioning back to civilian life can contribute to challenges that place Veterans at risk of becoming involved in the justice system.

In the first installment of this series, viewers are introduced to Veterans Treatment Court and its mission. The program demonstrates how VTC creates lasting change by addressing underlying issues, connecting Veterans with meaningful support systems, and holding participants accountable while challenging them to build better lives.

While only a small percentage of Veterans in the Palmetto State become involved with the justice system, the South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs (SCDVA) remains committed to serving all Veterans. Through grant funding, SCDVA helps support Veterans Treatment Courts across the state. Central to the program’s success is mentorship, which pairs participants with thriving Veterans who understand their experiences. These relationships, along with connections to fellow participants, foster community, camaraderie, and shared understanding. 

Veterans Treatment Court balances accountability and support through a combination of required measures and therapeutic services. Core elements like drug testing and employment or community service requirements are standard across programs while additional therapeutic options—such as equine therapy or a farm retreat—vary from one circuit to another. All of these requirements are tailored to each Veteran’s specific needs and the charges that landed them in the program.
