COLUMBIA, SC (SCDVA) - Representatives from the South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs kicked off their annual Homelessness and Transition Grant meeting on Monday, June 15, 2026.

This funding provides sustainable housing solutions, enhances access to support services, and promotes long-term stability for Veterans in need or surviving spouses of Veterans.

Last year, the grant assisted 1,500 Veterans and eight widows, providing them with access to permanent or transitional housing; rental and utility assistance; and services related to wellness, employment, transportation assistance, and case management.

Veteran homelessness is a complex issue that requires unique solutions for each individual, according to SCDVA Transition Housing Coordinator, Amanda Nadel. This grant covers a variety of services to meet these unique needs.

“There's no income limit, so you don't necessarily have to be homeless living on the side of the street to get services, but it benefits everybody because we're helping Veterans get back on their feet and be stable and they ultimately contribute to all of our communities,” Nadel said.

Grant money is awarded to organizations offering these services. Eligible South Carolina Veterans and their surviving spouses can then seek assistance through these organizations.

During the meeting, representatives from 17 nonprofit, state and municipal organizations across the Palmetto State were updated on new and existing policies and procedures regarding the grant. By providing this invaluable training, they will be well equipped to assist our state's Veterans and their families while promoting responsible stewardship of the grant.

The South Carolina General Assembly approved $2.9 million to fund this grant in 2025. Starting June 1, they are planning to fund approximately $3.3 million, with each organization receiving between $50,000 to $250,000 to assist Veterans in their region.

Grantee applications for Fiscal Year 2026-2027 are closed, but organizations looking to get involved for fiscal year 2027-2028 can apply starting February 2027.
