COLUMBIA, S.C. (SCDVA) – The South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs (SCDVA) has opened hiring for two positions in preparation for the transfer of responsibility of Veteran homes in the state. The two positions are for a Director of Veteran Homes and Deputy Director of Facilities Management. Both positions require skills in administrative planning, public health, project, and program management. Salaries will vary based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. In July of 2023, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster signed legislation transferring the responsibility of Veteran nursing homes from the South Carolina Department of Mental Health to the South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs. This transfer will happen in two phases as listed below:

• July 1, 2024 – SCDVA will assume responsibility for all contracted Veteran nursing homes.
  • Veterans’ Victory House (Walterboro)
  • Campbell Veterans Nursing Home (Anderson)
  • Veteran Village (Florence)
  • Palmetto Patriots Home (Gaffney)

• July 1, 2025 – SCDVA will assume responsibility for all non-contracted Veteran nursing homes in the state.
  • Stone Veteran Pavilion (Columbia) – state-operated.

Currently, construction is underway for a contract-operated Veteran home to be named Patriot’s Village in Sumter that’s expected to open in the Fall of 2024. Construction is pending for contract-operated Veteran homes in Horry, Orangeburg, and Lexington Counties.

McCaffrey, Secretary of the South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs says the primary focus right now is planning and preparation for a seamless transfer of responsibility. “Our goal is to ensure the highest quality care for our senior Veteran population delivered with commitment, respect, and compassion; our Veterans deserve that and more. SCDVA has been, and will remain, committed to connecting families to Veteran homes across the state and we will continue in earnest our efforts to building those relationships. We will be diligent, transparent, and engaged with loved ones whose family members are being cared for in Veteran homes. Hiring professional staff with the values, skills, and commitment to excellence is a critical step toward ensuring excellence in our state’s long-term care for our Veterans,” said McCaffrey.
