COLUMBIA, S.C. (April 21, 2026) – Retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant Alfonso J. Boyd, the South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs (SCDVA) 2026 Veteran of the Year, was formally recognized by the South Carolina General Assembly for his lifetime of service to his community, state, and nation.
MSG (Ret.) Boyd was joined at the State House by his wife and family as lawmakers presented a concurrent resolution honoring his distinguished military career and continued leadership in support of Veterans across South Carolina. The resolution was spearheaded by SCDVA in partnership with the Chester County Legislative Delegation. The resolution was presented in the Senate by Senator Mike Stubbs of Chester County and in the House of Representatives by House Representative Randy Ligon, recognizing Boyd for his “many years of distinguished service to Chester County, the State of South Carolina, and the nation.”
A native of Chester, MSG (Ret.) Boyd served more than 22 years in the United States Army, earning recognition for his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to excellence throughout his military career. Following his retirement, he returned home and continued his service by investing in the next generation. He established and led Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) programs at Great Falls, Lewisville, and Chester High Schools, mentoring students and helping shape future leaders for more than a decade.
Beyond the classroom, MSG (Ret.) Boyd has remained deeply committed to the Veteran community. A longtime member of Disabled American Veterans (DAV), he has served as a chapter commander for more than ten years, guiding fellow Veterans through both triumphs and challenges. Under his leadership, the organization has led impactful initiatives, including Quilt of Valor ceremonies, community recognition events, and annual observances honoring Veterans and their families. Through his work assisting Veterans with benefits claims, MSG (Ret.) Boyd has helped secure more than $1 million in earned benefits for those who served. In addition, he has remained active in civic engagement efforts, supporting voter registration initiatives and partnering with local organizations to assist residents in need.
The General Assembly’s recognition highlights not only his military service, but also his enduring commitment to servant leadership. His contributions extend into his faith and community, where he continues to mentor youth and organize outreach efforts such as the annual “Ride for Jesus” event in Chester County.
MSG (Ret.) Boyd’s selection as SCDVA’s 2026 Veteran of the Year reflects the purpose of the award—to honor Veterans who continue to make a meaningful impact long after their military service has ended. As he stood alongside his family in the State House, MSG (Ret.) Boyd represented the very best of South Carolina’s Veteran community—demonstrating a lifelong commitment to service, leadership, and giving back.
